CHAPTER FIVE
Nicole stood at the nurse’s station counter and looked over Mr. Fletcher’s chart. There wasn’t much more she could do, at least not for another six hours. The X-rays indicated that Mr. Fletcher had a fractured hip. She’d sent the files to Doctor Garbo in Grayton and to an orthopedic specialist in Golden, just west of Denver. She’d bet money that Mr. Fletcher would be having surgery before the kids had a chance to eat all their Halloween candy.
A cup of coffee appeared in front of her. Nicole looked up from the chart.
Harley stood next to her with a hand on her hip and a smirk on her face. “I heard that the cute fireman from the festival was at the masquerade ball.”
“What are you doing here? And how did you know he was at the dance?”
“I’m covering for Melissa. And Mrs. Fletcher told me when I checked her vitals a few minutes ago. She was going on and on about how he helped to save Mr. Fletcher, that the two of you had sat next to each other and talked all night, that he was your dancing partner….”
“Yeah. We had matching cards. It wasn’t like I asked him or anything.”
“Uh-huh, are you sure?” Harley cracked a smile. It faded just as quickly. “I guess he told Maureen that he was engaged, and his fiancée couldn’t make it.”
Nicole’s eyes shot up. Thankfully Harley was focused on pumping liquid hand sanitizer from an empty bottle. Engaged? He never said anything about having a girlfriend. She could have sworn he had been flirting with her, or maybe she’d been flirting with him? No. She had tried to make sure she was on her best behavior.
Harley turned. “So how’s Mr. Fletcher? Do you think he’ll be Santa this year?”
Nicole stared at the chart, wanting to process what Harley told her, not talk about work. “I really don’t know. X-rays indicate his hip’s fractured. I’ve sent over my findings and recommendations.”
“I sure hope that he doesn’t miss Christmas. I mean, what would we do without Santa?”
Nicole flipped the chart closed. “Maybe we should focus on getting through Halloween before we worry about Christmas.”
Harley looked at the ceiling. “Yeah, you’re right. So, are you dressing up?”
“I thought I’d be a doctor. Or maybe I should dress up as a CNA who should be getting back to work before she gets written up.”
Harley laughed. “Point taken. I’ll just replace this.” She picked up the sanitizer and skipped down the hallway.
Nicole hoped that she hadn’t given him the impression that she had been even remotely interested. For a moment she thought he might be a nice guy, but between how he acted toward her and the fact that he was engaged, he was definitely a douche. Better to know now than later, when he could’ve broken her heart.

Dustin pressed on the gas. What the hell was he thinking? Why would he assume that the attractive woman who sat next to him didn’t have medical training? He wanted to make a good impression, not piss people off.
